KPAPIA Career Development Spotlight Series (2021)

As a part of Kaiser Permanente’s mission to provide high-quality, affordable healthcare services and to improve the health of its members and the communities it serves, the Kaiser Permanente Asian Pacific Islander Association (KPAPIA) business resource group creates shared content and opportunities for self-identifying Asian American and Pacific Islander employees to strengthen the quality and experience of their professional network.

In the summer of 2021, the KPAPIA leadership team contracted Nani via Kaiser’s professional development program, Stretch@KP, as the project manager for a career development spotlight series. Stretch@KP connects employees working in one sector of the organization with opportunities to develop their skillset in another field or area of interest. This series would highlight the professional development journeys of four employees who have worked their way into management or leadership positions during their time with KP. Their stories outlined the challenges they faced, lessons they learned, significant milestones of their journey, and advice they would give other AAPI employees navigating their career trajectories at Kaiser Permanente.

When she first learned about the project, Nani knew that translating the experience and professional advice from these four individuals using her palpable skill for multimedia storytelling would result in a fuse of inspiration for readers feeling stagnant or dissatisfied in their current roles. As an extension of her work as cohost and communications director of The Filipino American Woman Project podcast, this initiative helped Nani carry out her mission of helping Asian Americans develop healthier relationships with their psychological landscape to a more expansive audience, reaching AAPI professionals outside of the Filipino American community.

Over the span of a two-month time period, Nani would draft, schedule, then publish the written summaries from each interview on Kaiser’s social networking tool, Yammer, on behalf of KPAPIA to boost the business resource group’s community engagement and morale.
