The Filipino American Woman Project is more than a podcast. It’s a community-driven initiative that documents stories and life lessons by Filipino American women. After four seasons of interviews, cultural insights, and academic collaborations, the project has evolved into an online hub and educational resource for Filipino American women to navigate the complexities of their dual identities.
The History of The Filipino American Woman Project
The podcast launched in 2019. Shortly after, cohosts Jen Amos and Nani Dominguez met on Instagram. Although initially hesitant, Nani was driven by the project’s mission. To that end, she decided to leverage her skills to amplify Filipino American representation in mainstream media. Jen and Nani’s connection ripened over their first phone call, leading to an unexpected suggestion. Finally, Jen asked, “why don’t you cohost with me?” And the rest was history. Since then, the two have published over 150 episodes, launched a private podcast for paid members, and created a thriving online platform for their community.
Impact
Together, Jen and Nani foster a safe space for Filipino American women to explore the influence of their cultural background. The therapeutic effect of traditional talk-story goes against the grain, bringing culturally taboo topics to the forefront of social conversations. This unique approach led to collaborative opportunities with other aligned organizations. Namely, partnerships with academic and healthcare institutions such as the University of California, Davis, and Kaiser Permanente.
To add, The Filipino American Woman Project has gained recognition in various media outlets and campaigns, including features in Spotify’s recommendations for AAPI Heritage Month, NBC 7 San Diego, the San Diego Union Tribune, the Asian American Podcasters Association Golden Crane Awards, and participation in the Museum of California’s exhibit showcasing Filipino American contributions to California history.
Nani’s Contributions
What began as a cathartic process for Nani eventually hardened into a commitment to serve this treasured community. Her contributions span brand strategy, content marketing, workshop facilitation, website and social media copywriting, outreach, partnership management, and community engagement. By creating space for Filipino American women in mainstream media, Jen and Nani redefine societal archetypes and model the courageous act of sharing your story.
