2 Insanely Good Filipino Poetry Books About History, Culture, & Identity

This year for Filipino American History Month, let’s revisit two of my favorite podcast interviews from The Filipino American Woman (TFAW) Project archives. These episodes feature two of the best authors in filipino poetry.

Two of the best Filipino poetry books

Halo Halo: A Poetic Mixture of Culture, History, Identity, Revelation, and Revolution by Justine Ramos

Poet, Occupational Therapy Doctorate Candidate, & Author of Halo-Halo Poetry Justine Franchesca S. Ramos graces the TFAW Project stage in episode 92. She offers listeners an insightful perspective on the harmful lingering effects of colonization on Filipino culture, diasporic connection, and individuation. She discusses these topics and more in her book published in 2021, Halo Halo Poetry.

My Heart of Rice: A Poetic Filipino American Experience by Ashley Lanuza

We interviewed Ashley in episode 62 of the TFAW Project podcast. In our conversation, she shares her experience as a recent graduate in the era of covid. She celebrated by publishing her first book, My Heart of Rice, which is a poetic anthology of the Filipino American experience. Ashley explains how the process was cathartic for her, as she has always turned to poetry to help her through difficult seasons of her life.

Since interviewing these two lovely ladies, the TFAW community has grown exponentially. For starters, we launched a private podcast and a monthly book club. Additionally, we established our new home on our very own platform, thenewfilipina.com. Here, we host daily conversations, workshops and events, and mastermind focus groups for both personal and professional development through sisterhood.

One of the first events we hosted for our exclusive membership community was a poetry slam with these two authors. Click here to join and access the replay. Enjoy!
